Var Region Guide

The Var region of Provence stretches from the sun-drenched coastline of the Mediterranean across landscapes of olive groves, vineyards, lavender fields and beautiful medieval villages, up to the magnificent beauty of the mountains and gorges. With a climate of around 300 days of sunshine a year this is a wonderful place to visit and live, it is no wonder that so many people come from afar to buy luxury villas, houses and chateaux in this area, either as a permanent home, holiday destination or as a business investment in holiday lets, guest house, B&B etc.

The Var is divided into three areas; the Côte d’Azur with its wonderful beaches and sparkling sea, L’Arriere-Pays Varois (inland) with its hills, valleys, plantations and pine forests and home to a massive agricultural production of wine, olive oil, honey, fruit and vegetables, and Le Haut (high) Var with its breathtaking Verdon Canyon, lakes, rivers and waterfalls.

Provence produces quality food; olives and olive oil, goats cheese, truffles, chestnuts, fresh sea fish and herbs. No visit to this area is complete without tasting the famous “Bouillabaisse” fish soup, “La Daub” (meat casserole), “Aioli (garlic mayonnaise) and “La Caillette (cold Meat). Everything is made and produced with zeal including the bread which is a dedication. One has only to observe the early ritual of people going to the local bakery to understand the importance of a fresh baguette.

Let us not forget the Provence Wine. The Vineyards of the Var produce reds, whites and rosé of exceptional quality and no meal is complete without Provence Wine.
