French Riviera

One of the most famous destinations in the world, the French Riviera also known as the Côte d’Azur, basks in the iodine-scented Mediterranean Sea and the wonderful fragrance of the “garrigue” from the inland countryside.

World famous for the Cannes International Film Festival, Monaco; Grand Prix Formula One Racing, Grasse for its Perfume Factories and many Jazz Festivals, the Riviera attracts the rich and famous along with tourists in general.

The vivid colours and pure light have long been a haven for painters and famous artists visited the area particularly during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The French Riviera basks in sunshine with hot summers and mild winters. Stretching from Cassis in the west to Menton in the east there are a number of micro-climates. Difference in weather can differ between Toulon in the west and Nice in the east.

Toulon and the Var Region which includes popular tourist destinations of Saint Tropez and Hyères, have a slightly warmer and dryer climate than Nice in the east.

Toulon is the sunniest city in metropolitan France with an average daily temperature in August of 29°C and minimum temperature during the day in January of 5.8°C. The most rain is during October - November. During the winter the cold dry Mistral wind is frequent and strong in the Provence region particularly between Marseille and Toulon. It is said that the Mistral can cause restlessness in people and animals but is usually accompanied by clear sunny skies.

Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes are sheltered by the Alps which give protection from the elements with a gentle wind, although the Mistral occasionally blows strongly from the north-west and east. Rain in the area is rare but can be torrential especially in September. The average temperature in Nice during August is 28°C with an average minimum daily temperature during January of 6°C.
