Besse-sur-Issole located in “Le Pays Dracénois Centre Var”, was the birthplace of Gaspard-de-Besse the famous Highway Bandit who, so legend tells, stole from the rich to give to the poor in the 18th Century. It is said that he never caused his victims to shed blood and was quite a ladykiller making him famous throughout Provence. The Maures hills provided the setting for his many adventures and an ideal hideout for this wanted criminal.

Besse appears in the summer as an oasis of freshness thanks to its natural lake of 4 hectares. A belt of wooded hills of oaks, pines, brooms and thyme extends on nearly 20 hectares surrounding a wine plain of 800 hectares of vines. From the hills there is a panoramic view of the valley of Issole (Mount St Quinis).

The centre of the village exudes an environment of cordiality, accessibility and charm. Walking around the 9 fountains, including one Roman classified, you will discover narrow paved lanes and the tower of the clock with belfry and bell-tower. Wednesday morning gives way to a typical French market.

The village is located at 3 km south of the RN7 between Brignoles and Luc (15 km). The airport of Toulon/Hyères (Rotterdam, Brussels, Paris and London) is located approximately 36 minutes drive while Nice airport can be reached in 1 hr 20 minutes. By train the TGV from Paris stops at Toulon and Hyères (under 4 hours from Paris). Coastal beaches can be reached in 30 minutes.
