Bandol
Bandol is probably best known for producing the famous Bandol wine. With its soil adapted perfectly to the “mourvèdre” grape variety – renowned as the “King of Grapes” the wine making tradition in the Bandol area goes back many centuries. The area is characterized by its steeply terraced vineyards locally known as “restanques”.
Bandol holds a market Tuesday mornings while close by at Sanary-su-Mer there is a large daily market. There are many things for the visitor to do including walking, cycling, potholing, climbing, fishing (deep-sea fishing excursions take place from nearby Sanary) and water sports. For the golf enthusiast the “Golf de Frégate in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer offers 18 holes and a fabulous sea view.
The beautiful hilltop village of Le Castellet with its racing circuit is within easy reach. The old circuit “Paul Ricard” was built in 1970. In 2001 Toyota Motorsport GmbH, the team that competes in F1, decided to make “Paul Ricard” its centre for testing. Philippe Gurdjian and Formula One Bernie Ecclestone transformed the aging track into a completely new approach to tempering the dangers of testing.
The Castellet Airport built in 1962, is now the most sophisticated private airport in the region. The 1,750 metre long runway can accommodate large passenger planes as well as private jets used by racing’s elite. The strip can accommodate helicopters, Falcon 200s and Global Express, FBO, refuelling etc. Castellet also offers Exhibitions, Public Areas and Hotels including “Hotel de Castellet” providing the height of luxury, its 18 rooms and 5 suites are often booked by the rich and famous.
