Rhône-Alps Region Guide

Two geographical features, the Alps and the River Rhône, give this region its name and dramatic character. Majestic snow-capped mountain peaks dominate the east, while between north and south the Rhône provides a vital conduit.

Lyon is the second city of France, an important commercial and cultural centre with fine Renaissance buildings and museums, known as the capital of French gastronomy.

The marshlands of the Dombes and the fertile agricultural Bresse plain lie to the north. This region is noted for its famous Beaujolais vineyards together, with the Côte du Rhône wines.

The French Alps attract year-round popularity with internationally recognized ski stations such as Chamonix, Megève, Courchevel. The 1968 Winter Olympics were held on the slopes of Chamrousse as well as a stage location of the Tour de France.

Along the shores of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva), one of the largest lakes in western Europe, can be found elegant Spa towns, while the chief town of Grenoble offers a busy university and high-tech centre. Grenoble’s added attraction are the two spectacular nature reserves in France, the Chartreuse and the Vercors.

South of the region there is an abundance of vineyards, olive groves and orchards intertwined with colourful sunflowers and lavender. Châteaux and mediaeval towns and villages dot the landscape.
