Galleys first called at Toulon in 1624, then anchored permanently in the port from 1748. Their three to four thousand galley slaves dressed in red jackets and yellow trousers were forced to carry out heavy daily tasks, such as the building of ships and the Radoub basin and main sea wall, thereby contributing to the Bay’s current configuration.
Toulon’s convict prison was closed down definitively in 1873.
