Provence’s “Painters of Light
Famous artists such as Dunoyer de Ségonzac, Signac, Luce and later on Bonnard, Dufy and Camoin were all inspired by Saint-Tropez when the town was still a small fishing village. Fauvism was born in the small port bathed in bright sunlight. Signac’s house in Saint-Tropez became a favourite meeting place for artists.
Saint-Tropez’s “Musée de l’Annonciade” has been housed in the Chapelle de l’Annonciade (17th c.), since 1955. The collections donated by the industrialist Georges Grammont confirm the important role played by Saint-Tropez in the evolution of art between the late 19th and early 20th centuries and include fine works by Signac, Seurat, Luce, Bonnard, Matisse, Braque, Derain and many others.
