The medieval village of Cotignac often referred to as the Saint Tropez of “La Provence verte” or Green Provence, is located on the D13/D22 about 30 km west of Draguignan, 15 km south of Aups and 15 km east of Barjols and northeast of Marseilles.
One of the main features of Cotignac is the wall of rock on its northern border. Way back in history the inhabitants of the village lived in caves in this cliff face, seeking refuge from invaders, religious wars and epidemics. In fact some of the lower dwellings are still inhabited today. These cliffs can be visited today by following a path which passed in front of large oil presses leading to the old hospice de la Charité. From this point follow narrow paths carved into the cliff face and protected by railings.
Cotignac is also famous for its Tuesday morning market, spreading throughout the long central “square” and extending along the small streets leading off the square. The colourful market with stalls selling an array of the finest fruit and vegetable produce, together with every other item essential to everyday living including cooking utensils, clothes, material, ready make curtains and tablecloths, handmade baskets, cheeses, meats, flowers and more. In the centre of the village which is shaded by plane trees, are outdoor tables from the many cafés and restaurants. Don’t worry if you have spent too many Euros in the market as there is a “hole in the wall” facility one end of the central long “square”, although be warned you may have to join a queue.
Take the time to wander throughout the village and visit the shops and boutiques, many filled with antiques and local crafts.
During the 6th Century there was a large Jewish settlement in Cotignac, acknowledged by the “Quarter de la Synagogue” and the “rue de Jérusalem”.
Before you leave the area take a drive north of Cotignac of approximately 6 km to the village of Sillan-la-Cascade to view the 42-metre high waterfall set in a beautiful setting.
There are a few Gallo-Roman remains to be found at Nestuby 3 km south of Cotignac.
History abounds in and around this truly beautiful medieval village. Cotignac and its market must be a number one of your list of places to visit in Provence.
