Intoxicated by this wondrous perfume, the blue sky and shimmering sea, I knew that my early morning struggle was most definitely worth every effort.
The shock to my system at having to drag my body from the comfort of a warm bed at 4 am on a particularly dark and wet October morning, almost made me cancel the planned trip to the South of France. I tried to convince myself that I could conduct a fresh search for luxury villas, houses and apartments in the beautiful villages and coastal resorts of the Provence – Cote d’Azur – Var region by telephone and email.
Guilt swept through my stiff limbs as I remembered the trusting clients relying on me to produce their dream homes among the vineyards of Provence and the sparkling Cote d’Azur.
I forced myself to join the early Monday morning traffic on the M25 and M11 to Stansted Airport. Some 3 hours later I joined the queue at a Ryanair check-in desk bound for Toulon/Hyeres. I wished fervently that British Airways still did this route from Gatwick or better still from Heathrow just 45 minutes from my home.
I looked around the airport for a MacDonalds. Their early morning Sausage and Egg Breakfast was a secret treat I allowed myself when travelling alone. Perhaps I was too tired. I could not locate the longed for energy boost so settled for a couple of glasses of Chardonnay and Smoked Salmon.
Eventually on board I just wanted to sleep. Please Mr Ryanair allow us to place our seats back a couple of inches! Oh well at least the slight discomfort only lasted a couple of hours.
We landed. As I stepped from the airport arrivals lounge into that wonderful light Provence is so famous for, my senses were greeted by the powerful smell of Lavender being trimmed by the airport gardeners.
