Two geographical features, the Alps and the River Rhône, give this region its name and dramatic character. Majestic snow-capped mountain peaks dominate the east, while between north and south the Rhône provides a vital conduit.
The French Alps attract year-round popularity with internationally recognized ski stations such as Chamonix, Megève, Courchevel. The 1968 Winter Olympics were hosted by the city of Grenoble and held on the slopes of Chamrousse. Grenoble, often called the “capital of the Alps”, is also preparing to bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics making the area a good investment for property.
Grenoble is often visited by the Tour de France.
Along the shores of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva), one of the largest lakes in western Europe, can be found elegant Spa towns, while the chief town of Grenoble offers a busy university and high-tech centre. The marshlands of the Dombes and the fertile agricultural Bresse plain lie to the north. This region is noted for its famous Beaujolais vineyards together, with the Côte du Rhône wines.
