The French city of Grenoble hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics and is preparing to bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Surrounded by mountains and the famous ski resorts of Chamrousse, Meribel, Les 2 Alpes etc., Grenoble has been called the “capital of the Alps”. Glaciers such as Les 2 Alps are open all year round for skiing. The area is oftened visited by the Tour de France.
Grenoble is mainly built on the alluvial plain of the River Isere. Mountain sports are an important tourist attraction with some 20 ski stations all within a 30 minutes drive from the city.
Access to Grenoble is easy. There are 2 airports: one near Grenoble approximately 30 minutes and the other near Lyon some 80 minutes. Geneva Airport is only 2 hours away. The nearest railway station (SNFC) is about 5/10 minutes (Eurostar to Grenoble - High Speed train 3 hours from Paris). Switzerland and Italy are close by.
